Cool Event ~ Rendra Zawawi Farewell Gig @ Bangkok Jazz, 30 & 31 January 2009

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

Welcome back to the hellish reality that is
"Got to work tomorrow... 3 more days to weekend. Why didn't the office grant me leave till the weekend? WHYYY!!! This sucks..."
No worries mate, to those working while your other lucky Chinese office mates are still on a holiday... fret not. I found another gig, last minute, non EDM-related but will definitely jumpstart your weekend party mood.

All you have to do is wait 3 more days, wish Thank God its Friday! and head down to Bangkok Jazz.

Rendra Zawawi Farewell Gig @ Bangkok Jazz, 30 & 31 January 2009

What
On 30 and 31 Jan, Rendra Zawawi will be putting on a final show before leaving Malaysia in February for a little overseas sojourn. As it might be some time before he got back to KL again, this is definitely a gig that's not to be missed.

Rendra will be playing two 40 minutes set, consisting of all of his songs, and will be backed by his band, consisting of David Rafael on Lead, Alda Tan on Bass, Stephanie Chan on Drums, Rohnie Tan on Violin, Adil Johan on Saxaphone, Ywenna Carolin on Piano, and guest musician Savy Ho on violin, all big names in their own right.

(Info source - TOKL)

When & Where
10 pm, 30-31 Jan 2009 @ Bangkok Jazz Thai Bistro, Chulan Square, 92 Jalan Raja Chulan, 50200 Kuala Lumpur

Who
Folk singer songwriter... Rendra Zawawi

Rendra's music is best describe as folk rock, with a most occasional violin twist. He is often backed by amazing music friends who would often tell him the chords he is playing. He usually tends to write memorable sing-alongs, depending on the weather.

Often when asked, he is a songwriter first, singer second and guitarist third. He blames the English weather for whatever mellow sentiments you may find in his music. To date, he has recorded over 20 songs and enjoys the wonders of playing live all around.

There will be different guest artists for each night of the gig:

Friday - Hameer Zawawi, John Oommen (Silent Scream) and Zee Avi
Saturday - Hameer Zawawi, The Dizzy and Yuna

How
No cover.

+ Info
For more info and reservations contact 03-2145 8708

Why attend this gig?
The last Rendra Zawawi show in Malaysia? Kinda caught me in surprise. Hoped to be able to see more of his folk musical wonders when he gets back. Cause you can never get enough of a good thing.

The 2 night showcase will also be enhanced and kicked up a couple more musical notches with with Yuna and Zee Avi as guest artists.

NICE...

Anyways... My most recent time listening to Rendra was at

And when I was there... I had a really good time, listening to good music.

To no shame, when I hear something really good, I get goose bumps... The anticipation, the excitement, the astonishment.

Something like your first kiss with a new lover. You take it in, you feel it, you want more at first but you hold back knowing that all nice things will loose its charm from over time and you pace yourselves for such goodness should be savoured. (Here I go again with the philosophical talk)

Take a look at this vid and you'll get what I mean

On the Up ~ Rendra Zawawi 1 @ NBT, 19/11/2008

For more of Rendra's musical goodness (or whatever that is left before he jets off overseas) visit his pages at

Plus I also found this site which features all of Rendra's recorded gig performances, including the vids I posted up... NICE.

PS - Now I have 5 events to attend this Friday and Saturday... and they say Malaysia has nothing to do at night besides have supper and illegal racing. Wait a sec... 5 events? Arghhhh!!!

Do check out some events you can attend this weekend in the earlier posts.

Cool Tube ~ Daft Punk DIY

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

Holidays without traveling ANYWHERE can lead you to boredom and boredom leads to over exposure of YOUTUBE. And due to the boredom, I stumbled into some good stuff on the tube...

In this post, I dedicate the info to all die hards of Daft Punk especially Dandelion (She loves these electronic android DJs)

"Daft Punk DIY" is all about HOW YOU (yes you...) can perform some of your favourite Daft Punk music at home!

First of all, I think you know that Daft Punk' music is heavy in sampling other's music and making an awesome electronic version of it. Apart from that, their distinctive sound are heavily driven by synthesized vocals.

Check out this vid for an idea of Daft Punk's music (and also a feel of their massive raves)

How to get that synthesized voice?

Easiest way by getting/making a TALK BOX.

A talk box is an effects device that allows a musician to modify the sound of a musical instrument. The musician controls the modification by Lip syncing, or by Changing the shape of their mouth.

The effect can be used to shape the frequency content of the sound and to apply speech sounds (in the same way as singing) onto a musical instrument, typically a guitar (its non-guitar use is often confused with the vocoder) and keyboards.

A talk box is usually an effects pedal that sits on the floor and contains a speaker attached with an air tight connection to a plastic tube, however, it can come in other forms, such as the 'Ghetto Talkbox' (a homemade version which is usually crude) or higher quality custom made versions.

And after you done perform some simple DIY, provided you have a keyboard... You are set for Daft Punk performance galore.

And with some practice, you can become this

Nice...

This is the Ghetto/Homemade talk box

Follow this link to the DIY MANUAL to making your own Talk Box.

I'm looking into making this.

But have to wait for my sister to come back and bring her big ass key board.

Then I will Daft Punk you guys.

Muahahaha...

Cool Events ~ 7aste is back and our last weekend of January is going to kill us!

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

Last weekend of January is REALLY gonna kill me

We have

And now...

The 7aste party is back in town... Another killer party to end January with

7aste parties kinda took a hiatus for 2008 and the last time I was a 7aste session, I was privileged to have experienced the legendary sounds of David Morales

Check it out...

David Morales is an internationally acclaimed Grammy winning house music DJ and producer. In addition to his production and DJ work, Morales is one of the most prolific remixers of all time, transforming many pop music songs into club-friendly dance tracks.

I love House Music...

This time around...

Girl on Girl DJ action? Yes please...

What
According to 7aste
7aste brings capital revelry to the next level!

DJ Sarasa and MC Masia One, the dynamic duo from Japan will raise the roof as their phat beats and funky rhymes rock the house. Also features live acts by Rav Thanker, Tugu Drummers, Evolu7ion Dancers and Stilt Walkers.

7aste the excitement... be there!

When & Where
30-01-2009 (Fri), 9pm till late @ Poppy Garden, 18-1 Jalan P. Ramlee, 50250 KLReservations and enquiries are available from 12noon - 6:00pm Monday to Friday.

How
No cover.

+ Info
Reservations and further enquiries 03-2141 8888 / 2170 6666 or info@trendmatrixenterprises.com

Why attend this event?
Another sponsored event organizer in town with essentially the most generous way to invite party people to come to their event

Nice... I'm thirsty just thinking of this

And also, you can take home some contest and game prizes cause when you're there, there two games you can participate and win 7astefully prizes
  • Uber-cool gadgets up for grabs when you ace the Charac7er of 7aste Game
  • A 3D/2N rejuvenating holiday to Pangkor Laut Resort is all yours if you make the lowest unique bid

Other reasons? Music wise... Hip Hop R&B with plenty of live shows and musical performances. I'm ok with that.

Plus I'm sure that the Tugu Drummers will drum the place down to the ground. Ethnic power!

It is more of a promotional event serving the best interest of organizer and the club while providing attendees with a taste-feel-like impression of the brand. Hmmm...

Just get yourselves there and get ready to be EVOLU7IONIZED!

PS - Haiyo... Johan Gielen or 7aste?

Johan Gielen and 7aste? Nice... Must bar hop lah, luckily Jalan P. Ramlee to Asian Heritage Rown is 10 mins away. Crazy partying cause the next night, Saturday the 31st, I will be at Quattro and then Palate Pallette (psytrance party).

4 venues... 2 nights... I CAN DO IT!!!

Cause I work in KL and 1st Feb is a holiday... NICE!!!

See you guys at them parties.

Chiowza.

Clubbing 101 ~ Revenge of the PSYth... Final episode

Previous posts Star Wars-named partayyy series...

Ending my Star Wars-named post series with the final Clubbing 101 for January

Clubbing 101 - PSYTRANCE & GOA TRANCE
Psychedelic trance or psytrance is a form of electronic music characterized by hypnotic arrangements of synthetic rhythms and mesmerizing melodies. It first broke out into the mainstream in 1995 as the UK music press began to report on the exploding trend of Goa trance.

Since then the genre has diversified immensely and now offers considerable variety in terms of mood, tempo, and style. Some examples include melodic, full on, dark, progressive, suomi, psybreaks and psybient.

I used to think that massive raves with sophisticated lighting and visual effects, pleasant environment and big names sponsors are THE PARTY TO BE AT...

But when I explored deeper into the extent of what EDM has to offer, I realized that I have not even begun to uncover the TRUE craziness in which EDM has to offer.

Because to me, its all about the party and then the music. I don't become a fan of DJs... I become fan of the parties that they performed at/organize and the vibe I take home with me after those parties.

So let's watch these vids. If you can survive watching these two vids, then you are psychedelic enough to experience further EDM manifestation in this post.

WARNING

HEAVY SPEEDY SOUNDS, FASTER THAN OTHER FORMS OF TRANCE/TECHNO WITH STRONG BASS BEATS AHEAD

Psy History 1

Psy History 2

Done watching the vid? You survived? Skipped it? Liked it?

If you watched it... I consider you to truly have an open EDM mind.

A mind that has to be expanded... by any means. A spiritual, eletrophysical and psychedelical expansion guided by electro-shamans who conjures music for pure underground EDM musical-high.

As this coming 31st...

Cool Views ~ Event & party blogger? I LOVE IT

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

The world we live in today is a very small place indeed. Technology has joined the modern world together, as one entity, a global village via electronical means.

Things you can never experience back then (pre-internet ages)... can be experienced today.

For example, international DJs who performed on our shores, commenting on media coverage for that particular event... and get the comment published.

Those days, it'll take a magazine a duration of 1-2 months (1-2 issues) to get this done.

That was back then. Media today is no longer the barrier... it is now the bridge.

Those who disregards electronic media, do not know the extent of this platform to mold and shape modern communities.

Websites, online media sites, forums, chat rooms and BLOGS are now in the same league, or maybe better than their dying physical manifestations.

Someday... EVERYTHING WILL BE ELECTRONIC AND ROBOTS WILL RULE THE WORLD!!!

Muahahaha...

The mighty folk duo of NZ... Flight of the Conchords - The Humans are Dead

Wth... such words to tell you that my Youtube page with the vids on the past Smartie Partie massive rave last month...

Was visited and commented by the SMARTIE PARTIE (SP) people. Or at least some one who manages their official Youtube page.

I'm vain but in a very good productive way. You will see the point that I want to make with this hoohah of a post at the end.

This email pointed the way

Check out my vid (the one about the SEXAYYY SP DANCERS)

This is Part 2... link to Part 1 at the end of the post

Check out SP's vid on that party they performed last month

My point is, if you blog about what you like most or what issues/stuff other people think you can't be good at blogging it...

THEY ARE WRONG!

In my young age as a blogger, I've had the chance to join local EDM groups/collectives, join a magazine blogging group, interview international DJs, go to awesome parties, get feedback from those who I write/comment about (DJs, organizers etc) and most importantly... make new friends.

So if you're thinking of doing this... YOU CAN AND WILL SUCCEED!

MAY THE FUN BE WITH YOU

For me, I got to get my schedule right, find more free parties for you guys and PARTAYYYY. Stress la this job. Haaa *sigh*

Chiowza.

PS - The next post I know you'll like it. Stay tune...

Exclusive ~ Your chance to Meet & Greet Mogwai, exclusively by Tuborg!... Isn't Mogwai the name of the cute Gremlin?

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

MOGWAI?

I don't know. Seriously... I don't have a clue. My background was in Hip Hop and RnB. Even my EDM indulgence is only about 4-5 years old. So this international gig slipped my mind like a slippery salamander.

Thank God Dandelion enlightened me with the whole Mogwai fiasco.

And in the spirit of SPONSORED EVENTS and opportunities to win or attain free tickets, I shall show you this

Good luck aight. Click on the image for the link-up to the contest page

When you click on the image right, it will lead you to The Fun Starts Here (a.k.a Tuborg) webpage. You have to be a site member to enter the contest.

So part away with some personal details, brace yourselves for some spamming ahead and HOPE YOU GUYS WIN!

CoolerClubbers have won contest fro The Fun Starts Here in the past. Buckets of Tuborg, gig/event/clubbing passes. The whole shebang-shebangs.

I.e. Edmundo won two tickets to see The Godfather of Crunk Lil Jon and Perv Calvin won buckets and buckets and buckets of lager from the organizers.

Check out our crunkin experience in this post
Operation Octoberfest... Last call for lager! ~ Heineken Green Room is back & Lil Jon @ Mist Club, 17/10/2008

Btw, this is my slogan, what do you think.
Mogwai is not a just a band. It is an uplifting spirit of musical freedom. To be at their gigs is an experience of audio freedom that trancends boundaries. (Don't copy k)
Corny right? My copywriting skills is not at tip top level la now. Tooo much insurance info in my brain. I bet Ollie and Dandelion has better ones.

Up next, some posts on LOCAL EDM GOODNESS and THE LOCAL PYCHEDELIC EDM party not to be missed.

TOKL pres. Time Out : On the Up (Jan '09) @ No Black Tie, 21/01/2009

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

I'm on I.M.H.S. (Indie Music Hungry Syndrome) again...

Need my drug of local indie goodness. My supply is coming this coming Wednesday. For now, I'm just going to enjoy the a 'pre-fix' of vids posted up on the tube of the up coming performers for this gig.

The indie lovin organizer and magazine

The indie lovin gig

WHAT
According to the organizer...
If you have been following On The Up since it's inception in May 2008, you might realise that this will be our ninth outing. To mark the new year, we have two seasoned local musicians sharing the stage with two acts that are relatively new to the scene. We have...
  • Singer songwriter 2StoreyHeart
  • Acoustic singer songwriter Izzy Mohamed
  • Fusion rock group Secret Love Affair

WHO
1. Singer songwriter 2StoreyHeart

After the disbanding of his former band, dreamingtosleep, in 2007, George finally broke out of his bedroom by playing at his first open mic event.

Performed at every doppelganger and cloth and clef gig, now with an EP in the works and a number of gigs lined up for him, things look like they are finally shaping up for 2storeyheart.

2storeyheart reveals the complexity of his emotions in his emo-filled lyrics and emo-sounding music. Nice...

For 2storeyheart music... www.myspace.com/2storeyheart

2. Acoustic singer songwriter Izzy Mohamed

Previously performed with bands such as Cultural Cocktails, Escaping Monday and Ziel but in 2004 Izzy decided to venture in the solo singer-songwriters world as well as play in another rock band.

Izzy converts her poems into lovely lyrics with some good accoustics to lull you into her stories. Very Sarah Mclachlan-ish vibe with Sara Bareilles vocals. Scrumptuos...

For Izzy Mohamed's music... www.myspace.com/izzymohamed

3. Fusion rock group Secret Love Affair

Secret Love Affair started off back in august 2007 with Reza experimenting with different sounds and subjects and then Nadya, Ruvi (drums) and bassist Wafi (cipuk).
Could'nt find any vids, but from their music on Myspace.... I'd say that the music has a very heavy guitar and bass with light synthy and disco drum beats.

Very upbeat jazz brit pop fusion with Manly vocals. Should be good to hear the live performance. Fusion rock... ROCKS!

For Secret.Love.Affair's music... www.myspace.com/bandaffair

4. Broken Scar

With the release of the his debut album “Midnight In St. Kilda” in 2006, the first two singles from the album, “Scratch” and “Down” hit the number one spot on the Xfresh FM Independent Charts. “Venus In September” was also featured in a number of compilation albums as well as the popular Malaysian teen television series, “Kami”.

Over the years, Broken Scar has gone through various incarnations from performing solo to a duo and finally to a full blown band. Kevin (lead) played shows relentlessly and toured nationwide. Kevin has also ventured overseas to Singapore and Australia.

2008 has seen the launch of Broken Scar’s Double A-Side Single, “The Shooting Star”. This release highlights two sides of the band; the ballad-esque acoustic side through the catchy chart topping single, “Shooting Star” and the heavier side through “Until I Fall”. That’s not all, the band has also thrown in two bonus acoustic tracks, “Shooting Star (Acoustic Version)” and a light-hearted track, “The Alien Song” in this release.

The myspace says :"High octane anthems to laidback heart-melting ballads"... I say, "bring it on Broken Scar... Can't wait to hear you guys perform live again!"

The sound... to me is like energetic John Mayer infused with rock hard Disagree. Sublime...

Chinese New Year around the corner, fantastic parties at the end of this month. It's going to be eclectically interesting year but a very tiring one lah.

Follow this link to the gig's special RM 10 VOUCHER.

I need a time out... TOKL pres. Time Out : Comedy Thursday @ Little Havana, 08/01/2009

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

The Star Wars titled post will continue after this comedy-based post. (It's the post before, and 1-2 post after that)

At least once a month, I have that urge to laugh everything out. To destress. To just see something sooo comical that the adage "Laughter is the best medicine" becomes "Laughter is the next fix (drug)".

Have you had one of those feelings before?

And you thought that comedy movies can cut it... but in reality (especially if you went to the wrong cinema) you will experience a situation where the movie is damn funny but you are the only 3-4 people in the theatre laughing.

Especially those concerning verbal jokes. Slap stick is sooo dinosaur. And vulgar jokes would probably make you sick.

When I'm in that situation, I always ask myself... "Isn't there something, anything else to do to get my monthly laughing binge?"

The answer is YES.

But you have to look for it. Venture further than your mamak/yam cha hang out and sometimes come early because you know these places will be packed to the brim.

Organizers (and magazine if you don't know) who enjoy and appreciate local comedy

The selected media of comedy transmission at a very nicely set up venue, Little Havana.

It is just you - the mic - the performer (you and a larger lah off course).

No stunts... No fourth wall... No props... No other crap. Juts plain raw performance.

The host and the comedy-driven crowd

Local stand up comedians for the night...

From left - Chi Ho (in true self mode, also host), Yugi (1st up) , Alfred (hyper in a good way)

Sri (1st show), Zac Kamal (duno how many-th show) and Ian (imported act)

We laughed... paused... laughed... paused... laughed.

It should have been laughed... laughed... laughed... fall down the chairs and laughed some more but some how or rather the show was lacking in energy.

Maybe it is a slow momentum build up before the coming shows. It was the first show of the year. Slow build-up of performance momentum is kinda good, especially if you're expected to perform to the same crowd monthly.

In short, don't want to run of of jokes la (this is true in the sense that, how many repertoire can you do? Have to rotate and improvise)

I get it guys and I don't mind (I already memorize the jokes I've heard and even some localized jokes which was used by international comedians. Ahaaa... caught red handed man)

Here are some past examples in which you can based my depiction of this stand up comedy gig.

Check it out. And I assure you, if you like the vids, you got to see the live one. Not just this gig. Any live comedy gig. All are equally if not better.

Alfred's jokes

Yugi's jokes (I like this guy, his "I am fat jokes" works)

Other stuff about the gig. It was crowded, full house till the organizers had to shut the door for late comers

Some of my merry men and bloggers who were there to share the laughter with

Many thanks to NigelAis for the pics. Need to tell him that dSLR photography are deteriorating.

Let's end this vid the best televised local sketch show I like. They did a song parody. They mentioned Bukit Beruntung (a place where I reside a couple of years back) and also touched about local economy-based monsters in which we know off so dearly.

Enjoy and good night.

Clubbing 101 ~ Attack of the Massive Party Clones... Episode II

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

For Episode 1.

Goodness gracious me...

I'm not able to find anyone else who went to this massive 2 days party at Mont Kiara Equestarian and blogged about it.

Found many who posted up their experiences to Massive Underground though.

Wonder why...

The 2 day spectacular... SPECTACULAR?

This is a late post, I know. Never wanted to post about this in the first place. Wanted to discard it but then I analyzed the pictures and found some beauty in it.

These are memories which I'm not keeping (a dramatic way to say I need more hard disc space).

Were we OVER-PARTIED in the year 2008? Did we had too much repetitious formats of various but similar parties?

Not to be non-thankful of the situation we're in, but if I have seen it before, should I see it again? Or even pay for it again?

Also proof that we were almost OVER-PARTIED in the year 2008 we had... on top of my head

  • The last RECHARGE, end of 2007
  • (massive raves from January - May 2008 which I didn't go due to my final year in varsity)
  • 2 Days Freedom
  • XLive (thedestroyer)
  • Hennessy Artistry madness around town with the climax, Flo Rida
  • Merdeka, Holloween massive raves in Sunway, PWTC etc
  • Another Freedom event called FREEDOM ELITE with plenty of motivational benefits
  • Zouk Out, Singapore
  • Some special by invites only massive rave like those held by Pall Mall and Kent at the Mines
  • Massive Underground
  • Siloso Beach
  • And if you're more adventures like my peeps from The Epic Tribe... crazy raves in Thailand

The respond to our near-boredom was what can be seen in the 1st day of Smartie Partie, which was a 2 day event, which had eager party peeps paying for both days.

Some even thought that it was another Freedom PD event. Hmmm...

THAT'S WHY THIS YEAR WE NEED A NEW FORMAT, AN ALL OUT MASSIVE RAVE BY MALAYSIANS FOR MALAYSIANS.

BIG NAMES, NEW NAMES, BED ROOM, NO NAMES, GHOST ETC ETC ETC
.

And when this materialize, plsss, i beg of you to let my blog publicize about it as much as humanly and bloggerly possible.

Now, lets get back to the post. Just let these pics explain to you of how it was to be at Smartie Partie (day 1).

Also a nice treat for you at the end of the post (applicable for boys and some girls, hehehe)

Enjoy (or not)...

About now, you must have figured that this "massive" rave is kinda funny... I mean, how to apply the word "massive" in the pictures above?

Here's a vid of the party. It's a good try to make you feel how I felt while I was there.

Can't you feel the emptiness?

I didn't give a dang, I partied anyways. I can party to Psytrance, why can't I party here?

I had a private massive rave... yeah

Dandelion had fun too

Are you shocked or syiok? I was both, The emptiness shocked me, but then I realized, "Hey, it's like my private party... wohooo!!!"

Dandelion on the cam (official cam person no 2)

The percussionist and founder of Smartie Partie, Trace Harris

We found the founder wondering around.

Had a little chat but can't hear much due to the banging music (which I'm sure those who came on the next night was unable to... in conclusion, party on Fridays/crowdless parties)

Nothing more fulfilling than to interact with your performers. True?

Enough with the party, now let's get to some VISUAL TREATS. Some Smarties for the eyes.

Smartie Partie Dancers in SEXAYYY ACTION. Check out the vid at the end of the post.

The SEXAYYY VID

Nice!!!

Like the post title, I'm using corny Star Wars analogies and renaming episode titles (such a nerd). Tell me if Star Wars is not THE sci-fi ultimate series? (see I'm sooo nerdy, in a good EDM lovin way)

There was about 6-7 episodes of Star Wars right? This post will have more to come too.

Stay tuned...

Clubbing 101 ~ The Local Empire Must Strike Back... Episode I

I LOVE MY'S EDM scene to be exact

As everyone of you know (or should know by now), the local EDM scene is progressing. Over the past 1-2 years, we have witness the emergence of many more DJ collectives than before. Some were expansions of previous collectives, while many others are new ones.

All dedicated to move the scene to the next level.

Due to an increase in entertainment venues, performing opportunities and corporate venture into the scene... local DJs now have a bigger better platform to expand the EDM scene they have work so hard to nurture.

More upcoming local DJs, producers and collectives are emerging from the woodworks to claim their share of the empire... and some of them has even reached CULT status around town.

For example, on top of my head, when you mention to me Nu Rave, I think of LapSap. Hard Trance? Bass Agents. DnB? Loops Collective. Bedroom DJs? FoundationKL. Psytrance? The Epic Tribe.

Not to mention DJs, producers and collectives which emerges from DJ schools such as Playaz Universe, Bionic, Groove Syndicate, Royale Academy etc etc etc.

Off course, our local EDM doors have also been blessed with organizers who bring the lights of international superstardom such as (on top of my head lah)

Tiesto
Scott Alert
Judge Jules
DJ Nenes
Josh Wink
Benny Benassi
Hernan Cattaneo
DJ Shah
DJ Tom Piper
Jochen Miller
DJ Troy T
Alex M.O.R.P.H.
Cosmic Gate
Ferry Corsten
Johan Gielen
Matt Hardwick
Above & Beyond
James Zabiela
Carl Cox
Paul Van Dyk
DJ Sasha
Gregoire Pagnoux
DJ Dave Seaman
Timo Maas
David Morales

And recently Armin Van Buuren

All of the above came during the past 1-3 years. Those 3 years where I declare a new FREEDOM has emerged (not the fest in PD ok).

A FREEDOM where some holes in legislation and the increased flexibility by our governing power has granted more FREEDOM and leeway to event organizers. We have seen lat least one major massive rave every quarter, and many... MANY parties every month.

This FREEDOM also applies to new corporate sponsorships and branding exercises thru the vehicle of EDM and parties. In short, the use of parties to promote products (branding).

All we need to do is wait for the governing powers to follow up and legalise clubbing hours to 5am from the current 3am limit. Pretty please...

So solely from the long list of international acts above which midgets local efforts and trashing local competition... I'm declaring that the local boys needs to fight back.

Because as off today, I HAVE YET TO SEE A REAL MASSIVE RAVE WHICH IS BY LOCAL DJS FOR LOCAL RAVERS.

I have seen some try. Like Indepen-Dance @ Putrajaya back in 2007.

CoolerClubbers Ollie, Khvn and GraveDigger were there. It was not a success story I know, but after that? Nada (zero).

I know, some of you might scoff my idea saying that our local boys are incapable, but how about Rock The World (RTW), RTW 1, RTW 2 and other RTWs that follows? All local, by local, for local. Are you telling me that rockers are the only ones who have the cohones (balls) to do this?

Come on organizers, it was one of my new years resolution to see a local massive rave party with a massive line up of local acts in 2009. Cross my fingers. Hope to party.

This new years resolution was also fueled by these 3 parties I attended pre and post New Year.

The crazy emptiness I witness at Smartie Partie (Friday) @ Mont Kiara

This prooves that international acts can fail. If you had planned to go for 2 days... haiya...

The chilled out LapSap's X If DELLicious @ Palate Pallete

and the really crazy fun time at Excessive Records 9th Anniversary @ Maison.

Will post about these parties in the coming post and will end it with my all time favourite EDM collective's party preview.

Stay tuned.

It would be

1. THE BEST MEMBERSHIP DEAL

2. THE BEST COVER CHARGELESS DEAL

My comments on this?

Hmmm... as off today, this was how many people who have joined in this membership.

AND THE NUMBERS ARE GROWING!

There is no mentioning of a cutt-off point. This is where my scepticism comes in. Can they really hold to this membership promises?

Some people might say to me "Hey Fuzz, why are you bitchin around about this. It's a good deal. Free clubbing. Free booze. What else do people like you want?"

My deal is that YES, free clubbing at the new Zouk. Proven by those nuravers who attends Barsonic weekend nights. YES, name on guestlist every weekend with free booze.

I'm fine with this. Believable things. Experienced in the past.

But the new things like birthday party with booze and JUGS of free booze seems too good to be true.

It's ok mates, will get to the bottom of this. Have a few birthday boys this month and my weekends are dedicated to parties.

Will investigate.

Stay tuned.

Stay tuned for the investigation but go join the Facebook thing NOW! HURRY! URGENT! NASAP (Not As Soon As Possible)! No Malaysian Time!

Hahaha.

Brace yourselves for dry weekedays and a rush for a major festivities ahead. Please have more weekday excursion and weekend parties.

Cool Findings & Views ~ Abolish COVER CHARGE and we may prosper. Next step in nightlife entertainment in Malaysia

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

Don't mind the dramatic approach applied in the post title above. I just love to start things with a bang.

I've got some GOOD NEWS actually. But before that, let's get to some Clubbing 101.

Today we're going to talk about COVER CHARGE.

Cause people like myself dread these absurd charges. Stating claim that we spend alot of money on 'BEVERAGE' and alot of money is made in 'BEVERAGE' sales in clubs.

Beverage here includes all types sold in entertainment outlet and in particular those of the relaxing, mood changing, angst inducing and non-consiousness resulting properties.

As technology and social awareness expands in Malaysia, an increase of cheaper methods and sometimes more efficient methods of advertising, publicity and customer gathering has led to clubs and entertainment outlets to derrive from COVER CHARGES and offer better monetary solutions to incur profit.

Even with COVER CHARGE, what beverages available in retail stores are easily TRIPPLED & QUADDRUPLED when sold to club patrons.

This to me is a BIG PROBLEM. Especially when I have sought and FOUND beverage retail outlets which sells imported brands for less than RM100. I.e. Bacardi for RM 80-90.

I truly believe clubs with a cover charge and beverage sales based business plan, SHOULD NOT charge 300 - 400% more profit on beverage because they've charged cover in the first place.

Enough about my concerns, let's get to some education...

Clubbing 101 - Lesson 1 "Cover Charge"

What is a cover charge?
At bars and nightclubs, or restaurants with live entertainment, a cover charge is a flat fee for entry to defray the cost of entertainment such as live musicians, singers or a DJ, or for the use of a dance floor, pool tables, or services such as dancing lessons.

In some countries, restaurants without entertainment may have a cover charge or ("couvert") for bread, butter, olives, and other accompaniments.

And why entertainment establishments needs to apply this 'charge'?
Bars and clubs that use cover charges use the cover charges for several reasons.

In some cases, popular bars and clubs have a substantial excess demand; patrons are lined up outside the club waiting to get in. In this case, the club can gain additional revenue from customers by requiring an entrance charge.

Other bars and clubs use cover charges only on nights when there is live entertainment or a DJ, to help defray the cost of paying the band, comedian, or DJ.

Cover charges are usually much lower for local, semi-professional bands or entertainers than for better-known touring bands from other regions.

If major profit is based on substancial sales of food and beverages which can cover entertainment and other costs... can we find reason to show that COVER CHARGE needs to be abolish? What reasons are behind the abolishment?

  1. Price discrimination
In economics, the term "price discrimination" refers to charging different prices to different customers, based on the anticipated elasticity of demand of different customers.

Bars often offer student discounts because university or college students will have a different willingness to pay than an average consumer, due to their budget constraints. Thus, the bar sets a lower price for entry for university and college students because students have a more elastic price elasticity of demand.

Bars often have a “no cover for women” policy, to attract male drinkers. In the United Kingdom, this option is illegal under the Sex Discrimination Act 1975.

In some bars, there are also different cover charges for legal drinking age customers and for minors. Presumably the higher charge for minors is to make up for their lack of alcohol purchasing.

  2. Revenue-sharing with performers
The bar usually allows the band or performers to provide a list of guests who will be admitted without paying the cover charge ("the guest list"). The bouncer may waive the cover charge for some customers, such as regular customers that usually purchase a large number of drinks.

  3. Luxury cover charges
Luxury clubs with unusual architecture and interior design and a lush, high-end atmosphere sometimes have cover charges even when there is no live entertainment or DJs. The cover charge for these clubs pays for the massive renovations and the opulent, plush atmosphere which includes leather couches, candles, and attention to detail throughout.

Some high-end and luxury bars and nightclubs have yearly membership fees which can be interpreted as annual cover charges.

Is NO COVER CHARGE applicable?
YES. Some bars and clubs do not charge an entrance fee, which is indicated in signs stating "no cover" or "no cover charge" . These bars use the live entertainers to draw and retain customers in the establishment, so that the customers will buy alcohol.

To attract more female customers, bars often have a “no cover for women” policy. Some comedy clubs and strip bars may allow patrons to enter without paying a fee, with the implicit or explicit expectation that the customers will buy alcoholic beverages while inside. Some bars with "no cover charge" policies may have higher prices for their snacks and beer, to make up for the lack of a cover charge.

Legal restrictions in Malaysia?
Hmmm... I believe business practices in Malaysia is very flexible dependent on variables which I'm not going to cover today. Just enough to know that it is flexible.

Problems in NO COVER CHARGE application?
YES also. Many nightclubs oriented towards electronic dance music (EDM) have a cover charge because most of their patrons are not drinking alcohol. Bottles of water are also often priced at up to RM10 to offset the loss of revenue from reduced sales of alcohol.

(Source - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cover_charge)

That's it for now, in the next post... we will get to that GOOD NEWS as mentioned above and MY LIST of entertainment outlets namely clubs of all scale which DO NOT HAVE COVER CHARGE.

To be continued...

Also came back from a great forum at Bar Council last night, “Not Just Another War: Myth and Reality in Occupied Palestine” organised jointly by the Bar Council, the Malaysian Social Research Institute and the Cakap-Rakyat

Speakers were Dr. Rosli Omar (gave a depth intro), Hishamuddin Rais (fiery socialist), Dr. Farish Noor (International law panel that night) and Professor Gurdial Singh Nijar (WOWed us with his point of views)

Dandelion, Ollie and Peter "me me me" joined me to gain a better understanding on an issue which has to be resolved if there is to be lasting peace in the Middle East.

It was refreshing to find arguments to support my point of views on this issue.

Especially those which mentioned about the war being NOT a religious/historical battle, it is merely a colonialist occupation, David VS Goliath battle with capitalism being the mechanism behind it.

Ahhh... refreshing.

As hedonist as I make myself to be, I can't run from the fact that this issue affects me, as a global citizen who pries on harmony (so that I can do what I want to do, when I want to do it) but the capitalism mechanism is too powerful and a force which can be used to RUN and RUIN countries.

I'm affected no matter what I do.

So in that troublesome note, I'm going back to do what I do best.

Work, parties and events

(I sound shallow, but this is base on principles of "man are not immortals" and a very unpredictable mortality we have nowadays)

In the coming week. After you have survived ZOUK Crazy January tonight with the TRANCE KING... Armin van Buuren.

Or in my case of love for local music, OMFG! by TheAdBangers (Blink - LapSap and Didjital - Bass Agents collabo) at Barsonic, Zouk.

Then you should head down, after work/class/bumming around to these weekday events of the 2nd week of January.

WHY ATTEND THIS EVENT?
Its a nurave gig. Another OTHER nurave gig around town. More indie, more UG (Underground).

I like the drink promo. Nothing is better than to drown down some reasonably priced 'motivation' to get trough the week. Plus, the FIRST 30 GIRLS will get a free cocktail (before 12 midnight).

Nice...

The Bomb Shelter @ Cloth & Clef, 14/01/2009

WHAT
One special night of Hip Hop performances, DJs and graffiti artistry.

WHEN ~ 10pm, 14/01/2009 (Wednesday)

WHERE ~ Cloth & Clef, 30, Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang, 55100 Kuala Lumpur

HOW ~ Admission is free

WHY ATTEND THIS EVENT?
According to the organizer... The Bomb Shelter kicks off with a lineup of KL's most hardbody mic controllers!

  • Blastoff! alumni Trickytongue twists shit up
  • Schizzow brings some Graffiti Greatness to the night's proceedings

  • Plus, DJ Jocular of the Headshell Heroes will be on the 1's and 2's with a true school mix for all the real heads.
All this on a WEDNESDAY NIGHT??? Dang these people are really crazzzy (in a good way off course). Better drop by and check them out. Changkat BB is the next Bangsar anyways, and nearer to me. Hahaha.

Anything Goes, Anything Shows! featuring Zeitgeist: Addendum @ Palate Palette, 15/01/2009

Another thought-provoking and controversial big screen viewing along with fresh servings of free curry and seaweed popcorn screening at Palate Palette.

HOW ~ Admission is free

+ INFO ~ For bookings and table reservations call 03 - 2142 2148

WHY ATTEND THIS EVENT?
I missed the screening of Zeitgeist: The Movie.

This is the other one... Zeitgeist: Addendum. According to the movie description, this is a movie that provokes the mind of how we are all aligned with nature & digs deep into the root of the pervasive social corruption while offering a solution.
For detailed info, log onto www.zeitgeistmovie.com.

Fuuyoh... I like thinking movies. Especially those you can't even find anywhere in Malaysia. Free screening is one thing, it comes with value added advantages far superior to any local cinemas... thought provoking material and free popcorn. Thanks to Ollie for mentioning this sometime ago.

I'm provoked to go.

Let's end this 2nd weekend of January 2009 with the best artistically driven event to begin the year with

KLPac's 1st OPEN DAY @ KLPAC, 18/01/2009

WHAT
According to the organizer

Basically, it's one whole day jam packed with FREE performances, visual art installations, theatre and cultural games, arts workshops and demonstrations, staged readings, show previews, film screenings and, of course, the ever popular guided tours.

And if that's not enough to keep you occupied there will be some 60 over stalls on the lawn selling all kinds of interesting goodies and great finds (courtesy of the Bijou Bazaar team).

WHEN ~ 10am - 5pm, 18/01/2009 (Sunday)

Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, Sentul Park, Jalan Strachan, Off Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur

HOW ~Admission is free

+ INFO ~ For more info,email them at yuemay@klpac.org or contact 03-4047 9000

WHY ATTEND THIS EVENT?
Easy...
  1. KLPAC is the other and maybe better option for artistic liberation
  2. Fun Sunday enjoying highlights of what KLPAC has to offer for the year
  3. It is like a college open day, check out your local arts centre and find out what is has to offer, meet artistes, ask questions, participate, discover new things
  4. Festival like event with plenty to do such as

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Finals of the 1st ever KLPAC Idol
  • Dance performance by rising choreographer/dancer Aris Kadir
  • Performances by other talented acts such as Julian Mokhtar, Azmyl Yunor, Young KL Singers, KL Children's Choir, Bellydancers from Sirocco Secret Dance,Kayla Maxey of Flamenco Malaysia, KLPAC sinfonietta, Indian Cultural Drum Group (Sentul & Jln Ipoh), Persatuan Silat Cekak Pusaka Hanafi and more (as if the above is too little)

  • Preview of 2Somes by Chris Ling
  • Ritual Theatre workshop by Nanci Taynor

  • Amazing ticketing promotions for upcoming shows (for early birds).
For tiny bit more info, cause most of it has been posted in this blog visit www.klpac.org

Oh my...

Sooo many things to do so little time.

Bear in mind that 1/3 of our life is spent sleeping and resting. Another 1/3 maybe learning to live via educational programmes and institutionalization.

If the last 1/3 to be spent as a SLAVE to a the money mechanism and not as a MASTER of your destiny?

It would suck sooo bad.

PS - I'm just in the philosophical mode now. Better end this post, shut up and go find more sponsored parties to go to. Hahaha.

A quickie holiday and the best house party to end 2008

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

Work... work... and more work...

Thank God me mates and I are heading off to Time Out KL's COMEDY THURSDAYS for a bit of a good laugh being entertained by local STAND UP COMEDIANS.

Should KICK the workday blues out of my system like rugby player punting for the win

In the new year, with a new job and all...

I sometimes reminisce on the activities done in the past year.

Especially those memorable moments when the group bunches up and we have ourselves a good HOUSE PARTY. For any occasion, especially birthdays and major celebrations.

And with some LIQUID MOTIVATION like

At HOME-LIKE venues such as

With VIEWS which astounds even the KL locals plus the occasional fireworks display

We PARTY as mad as we can.

But this one time last December 2008, bout a week before Christmas, we ventured further into the outskirts of Selangor.

Bout 60km from KL to discover this gem of a HOME-LIKE party venue for another of our house parties.

It was a QUICKIE HOLIDAY of sorts. A chill-out party, one to celebrate past and coming celebrations.

Thank you in advance to Big Bro James, Edmundo, Shirley (Edmundo's love), How Zany, Peter "me me me" and Dandelion for making the last house party the most EXOTIC and CHILLED-OUT we've ever had.

So in order to make my reminiscing a silent and chilled-out one, let's listen to what the pictures says.

Relax and enjoy...

Can't wait for our next QUICKIE HOLIDAY and HOUSE PARTY.

But for now... I'm going to get back to more modern day slavery as an Informations and Agent Servicing Exec at a very prudent insurance company.

Really need a drink now.

*sigh*

PS - Next post on Saturday. Thanks for reading.

Humour me ~ Time Out KL's stand-up comedy night "Comedy Thursday" (Jan '09) @ Little Havana, 08/01/2008

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

I think it's time for my body to LAUGH AWAY all the past party toxins and hangovers with some good comedy and fun.

Laughter so loud, so crazy that all the post-party syndromes would just be SHOCKED out of my system.

I need to go to another comedy gig... and not just any other gig.

Must be off good quality comedians by an organizer who cares about local talents at a perfect venue for the comedy setting to take place.

Hmmm...

Should be...

The organizer who cares for local talent

The local stand up comedy gig with 4 ever changing local stand up comedy talents, at a good setting and value for every penny

WHY ATTEND THIS EVENT?
When was the last time you heard about stand up comedy gigs in KL? Harith Iskandar's Tour? Company's annual dinner? Xmas? Never heard so far last year? Never heard before?

If you have never heard of stand up comedy before, read my write-up of what STAND UP COMEDY is. Click HERE.

If you have heard of one previously, interested but was held back from what ever reason, I want to enlighten you with this video to enhance your perception of stand up comedy - especially one this indie and small scaled like Comedy Thursdays by TOKL.

Check this out. Then you decide if you want to go.

Thanks to NigelAis for the vid

The gig's format.
  1. Come early to avoid placements and table disputes.
  2. You will notice the actual venue (upstairs) tries to immulate a traditional comydy club brick-wall setting.
  3. You will feel that the venue setting is conducive for direct-comedy impact because its an intimate setting.
  4. You sit down. Order some F&B (with B being booze, preferably a Heiny)
  5. Wait. Chat up with some wholesome fun KLites (like you yourselves)
  6. Wait abit more for more people to come. Chat some more.
  7. Then the host MC Matt Sally will come up. Intro the show. Then continuosly intro each stand-up comedian who has a 25 minute set each.
  8. Comedian will come out, adjust themselves then began.
  9. You will........ Hahahahahahhahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahah to the very end.
Been to last month's Comedy Thursday. Laughed my arse off silly just like the format above.

What else can I say. Midweek excursion to a comedy gig at a cigar bar/club? Drown in some lager with some merry KLites? Laugh to some of Malaysia's up coming stand up comedians?

Nice...

Cool Events ~ 4 days of PARTYING later... there are 7 more events in the first week of January 2009

Visit our new blog at www.thecoolerexperience.blogspot.com

And 4 days later since 30th December 2008...

at the rate of a party a night...

My New Year Experience has ended.

It was all good.

New Year Eve itself was a party journey of epic proportions with all the craziness, suckiness and endeavours but ended in total party blisness plus a journey without the NYE yearly traffic hell. KL area was like any other weekend night.

Dhaima and I was from Ampang (7pm) - Wangsa Maju - Kepong (SueSue & Ollie joined us) - Soho, Mont Kiara - Urban Rock Out, CapSquare - Asian Heritage Row - Back to CapSquare - Kepong - The Waterfront, Desa Park City - home at 5am.

Now must get back to the normal, everyday, repetitious programming. Till the next massive nationwide celebration.

But wait...

Life will never get dull with the wholesome line-up of sponsored events and gigs around town. this month. Well... at least I have heard word of a worthy sponsored party at the end of the month.

Will get back to this worthy sponsored party soon.

For now, lets reflect on what was our New Year Eve's party week experience and preview of what's to come in the first week of January 2009.

The reflection

Bombay Sapphire + LapSap = DELLicious. Pre-NYE party with LapSap X If DELLicious @ Palate Pallette, 30/12/2008

NYE craziness and lameness all over KL (with NO JAM) but ending in total bliss at The Waterfront, Desa Park City (Fantastic gated residential with lake and all)

Celebration of one of the best DJ collectives in town, Excessive Records 9th Anniversary @ Maison, 02/01/2009

Now for some previews.

According to my frequent Internet sources, there are about 6-7 events recommended this week. This is base on availability and the variety of these events which will guaranty a fun and happening party weekend post NYE 09.

In this 4 days of party comeback post, we will preview

  1. Electrosexual @ Club 9 & the SiX Lounge, 07/01/2009

Is TAG and LapSap DJ nights around town the only places to party for you electro and nu-rave lovers? I hope you didn't think so because there are more options to party if you love this genre.

And to love this or any genre is to embrace variety. Especially the local indie/underground variety with the hopeful and more fun amateur DJs. So go and check them out.

WHEN ~ 9pm

WHERE ~ Barsonic, Zouk Club KL

HOW ~ For invites e-mail theadbangers@gmail.com or normal Barsonic cover applies

+ INFO ~ N/A

WHY ATTEND THIS EVENT?
What happens when Hard Trance NRG meets with Pop Chart Electro? We get the Ad Bangers and their once a month party installation called OMFG!

The Ad Bangers duo consist of Blink a.k.a 5ft from LapSap and Hoong a.k.a Didjital from the hard-hitting Bass Agents. This colabo is a play on the French music label, Ed Banger Records.

The “Ad” in their name refers to advertising, of course. So OMFG! is a meeting of people from the [advertising] industry to have a good night out.

So for a MUST GO unique experience surrounded by hard and nu ravers with some advertising guys thrown in the picture, you got to e-mail them for invites. My advise is, as it is a Lap Sap and every other private party group/night, we better follow them around.

5. The Listening Session feat. Zalina Lee @ The Apartment downtown, KLCC, 10/01/2008

WHAT
Saturday musical installation at the Apartment Downtown feat the talented vocals of Zalina Lee (Jazz, RnB, Soul). With powerful vocals and a bubbly personality to match, catch this talented singer-songwriter performing at The Apartment Downtown for an entertaining evening.

First of all its Zalina Lee!

This sultry songstress can really hit those notes to entertain you. Will fill in between songs with some witty chatter.

Nice...

And if you have MAJOR MOOLAH ACTION going on in your life and wouldn't mind spending a bigger (REALLY BIG) amount for your clubbing pleasure this coming weekend...

As you can head down to Zouk for 2 nights of INTERNATIONAL CLUBBING AFFAIR
